Overview

Epsom College is a co-educational independent school located on Epsom Downs in Surrey, England, catering to pupils aged 11 to 18. Established in 1853, it originally served as a charitable institution, providing boarding education for the sons of impoverished or deceased members of the medical profession while also offering accommodation for retired doctors. Since then, Epsom has expanded to include a Lower School and has extended its presence overseas.

The institution is widely recognised for its sporting excellence, particularly in rifle shooting, where it ranks among the UK’s leading schools. Many of its alumni have pursued professional rugby careers, representing teams such as Harlequins, England, and the British and Irish Lions.

With a core ethos of ‘serve, share, and care’, Epsom prioritises student well-being. The school sets a high standard for holistic support and is one of only four UK boarding schools awarded Gold Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools.

Epsom College Courses and Programmes

Lower School (Years 7 & 8)

The Lower School, catering to pupils in Years 7 and 8, serves as an ideal transition between junior and secondary education. Its objective is to provide a strong foundation for the remainder of each student’s journey at the College. Pupils are based in the purpose-built Lower School building but also engage in lessons and activities across the wider College, including its classrooms, studios, and laboratories within the main departments.

Year 9 & GCSEs

Year 9 marks the start of the Senior School and the beginning of preparations for GCSEs. However, these formative years go beyond academics. Through an extensive co-curricular programme, pupils have countless opportunities to develop leadership skills, embrace new experiences, and discover hidden talents.

Sixth Form

There are approximately 380 students across the two-year groups, ensuring each individual benefits from personalised attention while being part of a vibrant, diverse community. Each student is assigned a personal academic tutor who works closely with them, monitoring performance, setting achievable targets, and supporting them in maintaining effective working practices. Students meet with their tutors regularly for one-to-one sessions, fostering a strong mentoring relationship. Students are also encouraged to take ownership of their academic journey, developing independence and self-discipline that will serve them well in their future studies and careers.

At A-level, students typically choose three Principal Subjects (or four if they opt to take Maths alongside Further Maths). These subjects are carefully selected to align with their academic strengths, career aspirations, and university goals. To complement their core studies, students engage with the Core Curriculum, which is designed to broaden their perspectives and develop key skills essential for life beyond school. The Core Curriculum includes options such as critical thinking, research skills, or even practical qualifications like the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), which allows students to explore a topic of personal interest in depth.

Epsom College’s approach to A-levels not only focuses on academic excellence but also on preparing students for the challenges of higher education and the workplace. A wide range of enrichment opportunities, from leadership roles to co-curricular activities, ensures students leave with a well-rounded education and the confidence to thrive in their chosen paths. Whether aspiring to study at top universities or pursue professional careers, students are supported every step of the way, equipped with the skills, knowledge, and experiences to excel.

The house system benefits all pupils, whether they are boarders or day students. Quite a good school with good education and nice grounds. The architecture is also interesting. My brother actually went here but I’ve been here for exams and I’ve also visited several times. It was very much a sporty/rugby school but now it’s becoming more rounded and academic.
